Here's an intriguing presentation by J. Craig Venter on the creation of synthetic life. For those of you not familiar, Craig Venter was the driving force behind the completion of sequencing of the human genome, and has subsequently used his riches to found an institute and pursue the synthesis of new life forms. These new life forms would be created to act as antibiotics, fuel generators, etc, etc. While the possibilities for the good that these organisms could do makes them enticing, I don't feel that Dr. Venter satisfyingly addresses the security concerns about his work, nor the ethical concerns. It's definitely a video worth watching and discussing.
