Today is the anniversary of the Wahine disaster, when in 1968 the ferry Wahine struck a reef in foul weather. They mentioned on the news this morning that it's like the JFK assassination for New Zealanders - everyone of a certain age remembers where they were when they heard the news. Here's archived TV footage of the news coverage from the day following the wreck.
Ferries are as important here as they are back in Seattle, perhaps even more so with the remoteness of this place. I'm hoping to take a trip on the current Interislander at some point, but for now I appreciate it from the coast line. It is really beautiful, especially at night, to watch the ferries heading out to the southwest and coming back into port.
