Getting Settled

Well, things here are calming down a bit. Got enrolled at the uni, got an office, project proposal's on it's way, and I move into a little room in a house on Sunday. This weekend it's the Sevens in town, a big international rugby tournament where all the fans dress in costume. I'm hoping to make it downtown to get some pictures of all the mayhem... Apparently they've banned "Borat" like costumes this year, though - check out the photo on the link below to see why:

There's a handy website here, trademe.co.nz, that I've been using to acquire a few things. It's sort of like e-Bay - you bid on items for sale online. I'm picking up a bicycle tomorrow (Peugeot!), and I'm excited to get some independant transportation. Keep your fingers crossed for me, riding on the left side of the road!

It's taken a while to get set-up because they're in the deep throws of summer here, which means everyone's going in and out of town. Plus Wellington seems very relaxed overall. My favorite example of this is the cat in the university library. Also, you're allowed to eat and drink in public libraries here! It's supposed to encourage kids to come in off the street and have a snack and a book.

Another lesson learned: bank fees here are crazy! Luckily students can get an account that waives most of them, but otherwise you pay every time you use your ATM card, visit an ATM, or access your money in any way but standing at the teller. Yipers! I'm proud to say I signed up with the only bank that's not Australian owned, but instead totally New Zealand. Sticking it to the man, especially the bank-man, is fun on any continent.

I'll try and take some pictures this weekend, especially of the new place. Cheers!
