I knitted my mom a scarf for her birthday! I'm not spoiling any surprises - I already warned her that I was regressing back to making presents... just like all the clay what-its I made as a kid. I'm sending some back-ups as well.
Anyway, the scarf is the first thing I've ever knitted (besides several practice squares). I went to a craft night a few weeks back and worked the kinks out of my technique with some expert instruction, then got to work. It's not perfect, but it's a start. It's mohair as well, so it's pretty comfy... and hopefully not itchy. I think knitting is a craft I could get into, although I don't think I'll ever be as hardcore as the ladies and gents here who spin their own yarn; I'm not totally comfortable with literally embodying the role of spinster as I'm approaching it figuratively... But seriously, I take requests (within reason), and next I'm keen to make something out of a possum-fur blend! It's really soft and how fun would it be to have something made from marsupial fur?! It doesn't smell funny (I don't know why people think that). And they've got heaps of possums here since they're an invasive species, so there's loads of possum fur to make knitted crafts from.
I also ran a really exciting gel today (hopefully exciting - results back soon) so today has been really lovely and productive. I hope it's been that way for everyone - tragic anniversaries need that extra bit of cheer.

That's pretty! Are you going to be on Bainbridge at xmas? Maybe we can bring our knitting to the annual sshhmme xmas party if there is one (and if I'm around for it...I'm not going to have accrued much of any vacation time yet).
Yeah, I'm not going to be back until work brings me back to the northern hemisphere, hopefully next summer for some conferences and workshops. Plane tickets are madly expensive around Christmas. Maybe we could have a remote knitting party...
